KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest Christian (Ore.) built an 11 point halftime on their way to a 92-68 Cascade Conference victory over Northwest University tonight. The Beacons would lead the entire game.
Northwest Christian set the pace early in the first half as they broke out to a 20-8 lead in the first 6 minutes of the game capped off by a 6-0 run including two free throws by Kelsey Atkins, and two baskets by Tami Brown. The Beacons would maintain that lead the entire half. Northwest U. would close to within 10, 20-10 at the 13:25 mark, but NCU would build their lead back to 16 points with 12:07 left in the period as Haley Vandenhazel would sink a jumper. NU’s Carley Davis would hit a jumper with 3:04 on the clock to narrow the lead to 9, 39-30, but Lindsey Shearer’s basket would make it a 14 point game with 28 seconds to go. NU’s Jordan Asher would drain a three pointer with 9 seconds remaining as NCU would take a 49-38 lead into the locker room.
Ashley Coila would make it a 10 point ball game to start the half as she would drop one of two free throws (49-39), but Northwest Christian would answer with 5 straight points on a Kelsey Atkins jump shot and a 3 pointer by Aly Bruns to make it a 54-39 ball game. NCU would maintain the lead the entire second half as Tami Brown’s jumper would grow the Beacon lead to 24 points with 5:35 to go. NCU’s largest lead would come 55 seconds to go when Breanna Schmidt would hit two free throws for a 27 point lead, 89-62, as they would cruise to their 7th win of the season.
Northwest U. (1-8, 0-2 CCC) leading scorer was Sanda Milovic who finished with 17 points. Carley Davis contributed 11 points and Domi Mendezona dropped in 10 points for the Eagles.
Northwest Christian (7-6, 1-2 CCC) was led by Lindsey Shearer’s game high 20 points and she added 8 rebounds. Katie Collins scored 19 points for the Beacons who shot 47% for the game (34-73) and 88% from the free throw line. NCU dominated the backboards with a 55-29 rebounding edge including 21 offensive rebounds.
Northwest U. remains home and will host Corban University tomorrow night at 5:30 p.m. in another conference contest.
