KIRKLAND, Wash. – After dropping their first set, Corban University came back to win three straight sets for a 3-1 (14-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-23) victory over Northwest University on the final night of conference play. It was the final game for four Eagle seniors: Breanna Covey, Rebecca Heiner, Lauryn Ernster and Heather Shulke, who were honored in a pre-match ceremony.
In the first set, Northwest broke a 9-9 tie to outscore Corban 11-3 and take a 20-12 lead after two kills by Arika Zwack, two Olivia VanDlac service aces and a Corban miscue. Lauryn Ernster would give the Eagles the 25-14 set win on her service ace.
Corban would then heat up in the second set and the remainder of the match after the first set loss. With Northwest leading 10-9 in the second set, Corban would go on a 10-5 run capped off by Kiersten Hilt service ace to lead 19-14. After a timeout by NU, Corban would continue on their hot streak outscoring the Eagles 6-2 for the set victory.
The Warriors would continue on their hot streak in the third set and would lead the entire way breaking out to a 15-9 lead after a Courtney Mulford kill. NU would close the gap to seven, 21-14, but Corban would outscore the Eagles 4-3 for the 25-17 set win and go up 2-1 in the match.
Northwest U. would battle in the fourth set which would see 10 ties, but on the final tie at 15-15, Corban would go on a 5-1 run capped off by two kills by Olivia Shropshire to lead 20-16. NU’s Rae Ann Hastings would make it a three point lead for the Warriors, 20-17, with her kill, but two straight kills by CU’s Chandra Teague would increase their lead to 23-17. NU would make one more run at the Warriors and kills by Sarah Stoker and Breanna Covey and a Corban error, would close the gap to 24-23, but Northwest would commit an attack error which would give Corban the set and the match.
Northwest U. finishes the year at 13-14 overall and 7-11 in CCC play. They were led tonight by senior Breanna Covey’s 12 kills and 8 digs. Freshman Ashton Arbuthnot and senior Lauryn Ernster would each have 20 assists and senior Heather Shulke would have a match high 20 digs. Rae Ann Haistings added 9 kills for the Eagles.
Corban (6-18, 4-14 CCC), was led by Chandra Teague’s match high 21 kills while adding 12 digs. She hit .319 for the match. Olivia Shropshire had 10 kills for the Warriors and Katherine Salness had a match high 45 assists and added 13 digs. Kiersten Hilt had a team high 16 digs for the Warriors.
“First, I want to congratulate the Seniors in the NU program for their leadership and the integrity of their effort throughout the entire season,” commented NU head coach, Steven Bain. “While it is never satisfying to end the season on a loss, their steadfast commitment to a new process, and the commitment of their teammates, is evidence enough for me that we are headed in the right direction. I am already looking forward to next season to build on the foundation that we have established.”
