Eagles Fall Short to Beacons

EUGENE, Ore. – The NU Eagles battled the Northwest Christian Beacons tonight, but fell short, 70-66 in Cascade Conference play and dropped their seventh straight game.

Northwest Christian took and early 11-5 as Lindsey Shearer hit a driving layup at the 15:29 mark. After an 8-0 run by the Eagles, Alyssa Dario would put the Eagles ahead with her 3 pointer with 14:11 left on the clock. After four ties, NU would take a 26-21 lead after three pointers by Domi Mendezona and Jenna Lewis (5:07), but the Beacons would out score the Eagles 11-2 to give them a 32-28 lead capped off by Tami Brown’s jumper with 1:32 to go in the period. The teams would go scoreless the rest of the way as NCU would head into the locker room with the four point lead.

The Eagles would get a fast start in the second half as Corinne Burke would hit the first five points of the half with a layup and a 3 pointer to give NU the 33-32 lead. But NCU would come back to tie the game and the teams would exchange baskets as the game would see four more ties. With the game tied at 44 and 13:24 to go in the game, Northwest Christian would take the lead for good as they would out score the Eagles 18-4 to take a 12 point, 60-48 lead on Katie Collins’ trey at the 7:22 mark. Mendezona’s three point play would cut the NCU lead to 6 with 1:48 to go (62-56) but two free throws by Tami Brown would hit two free throws to put the Beacons back in front by 8, 64-56 with 1:08 on the clock. NU’s Burke would pull NU to within 6, 64-58 with 1:08 to go. The Eagles would not give up and with 9 seconds to go Mendezona would hit two free throws and Jordan Asher would steal the inbound pass and score to make it 68-66 with 8 seconds on the clock. Katie Clark would sink two free throws with 7 seconds left and Jordan Asher would miss a 3 pointer for NU as the buzzer would sound giving the Beacons the narrow, 70-66 win.

Domi Mendezona led Northwest (2-16, 1-9 CCC) with 15 points. Corinne Burke scored 12 points and handed out 7 assists while Alyssa Dario scored 10 points for the Eagles. NU shot 39% for the night and 77% from the free throw line hitting 13 of 17 shots.

Northwest Christian was led by Tami Brown’s 19 points and 5 rebounds. Katie Collins dropped in 17 points and teammate Lindsey Shearer had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. NCU out rebounded the Eagles 41-33 with 19 offensive rebounds.

“I thought it was our best overall team effort of the season,” said Lori Napier, NU head coach.

Northwest U. returns home and will host #6 Eastern Oregon next Friday night and the College of Idaho on Saturday.
