KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Northwest University earned a 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-16) sweep over Oregon Tech for a key Cascade Conference road win tonight. NU needed this victory to remain in the CCC playoff picture.
The Eagles would battle back from an early OIT 13-9 lead to tie the set at 17-17 after two straight Owl errors. A Rae Ann Hastings kill and Alivia Johnson service ace would give NU the 19-17 lead. With the score 23-21, NU, a Breanna Covey kill and another miscue by Tech would give the 25-21 set victory to Northwest.
The second and third set would belong to the Eagles as they would break open a close second set with the score 10-8 and out score OIT 5-1 to lead 15-9 and never look back. With the score 16-10, NU would go on a 5-0 run to put the set out of reach, 21-10, with a Sarah Stoker kill followed by four straight Johnson service aces.
In the final set, OIT would battle NU and would stay within one point a good part of the way, but with the Eagles barely in the lead, 17-16, they would out score the Owls 8-0 to end the set and the match. Two OIT errors, a service ace by Anna Thostenson and a kill by Sarah Stoker would give NU the important road win.
Northwest U. (13-11, 7-6 CCC) was led by Olivia VanDlac’s (Snohomish, Wash.) 10 kills. Rae Ann Hastings (Redmond, Wash.) added 9 kills and junior Sarah Stoker (Olympia, Wash.) added 8 kills for the Eagles. Ashton Arbuthnot (Puyallup, Wash.) had a match high 28 assists and senior Heather Shulke (Castle Rock, Wash.) had a match high 20 digs.
“Once our serve-receive stabilized, we were able to side out at a high percentage,” said Steven Bain, NU head coach. “That, combined with our ability to keep them out of system with some tough serving were keys to the match.”
NU remains on the road tomorrow as they travel to Ashland to take on Southern Oregon at 7 p.m.
