KIRKLAND, Wash. – The Northwest University Eagles opened their 2012-13 season with a 96-77 exhibition victory over the Blue Angels tonight.
Northwest would lead 17-8 with 15:20 left in the first half as Michael Russo would hit a 3-pointer followed by a lay-up in the lane. Ron Vander Schaaf’s lay-up in the lane would close the gap to six points at the 7:55 mark, 24-18, but the Eagles would go on a 6-0 run punctuated by Nick Crossan’s lay-up to make it 30-18 with 5:45 to go. 8 for 8 free throw shooting and a lay-up by Nemanja Grujicic would give NU the 42-28 halftime lead.
NU would maintain a comfortable 18-20 point lead throughout the second half as they would notch their first victory of the season.
Five Northwest players scored in double figures led by Michael Russo’s (Sammamish, Wash.) 25 points. Junior Michael Greene (Bellingham, Wash.) had 19 points, Ryan Dornik (Vancouver, Wash.) and Nemanja Grujicic (Ratkovo, Serbia) each had 14 points and guard Nick Crossan (Sammamish, Wash.) contributed 11 for the Eagles.
Back in the gym last night was 2012 NU grads, Rich Skillman and and 2011 grad, Tyson Christie. Both suited up for the Blue Angels team and provided fans with familiar play from the past. A lob from Skillman to Christie in the second half almost found its mark for a dunk as Tyson just missed putting it into the basket.
The Blue Angels were led by former Western Washington star, Morris Anderson’s 19 points, Ron Vander Schaaf (Central Wash. Univ.) with 12 and Elon Langston’s (Whatcom CC) 12 points. Lucas Henne (Western Wash. Univ.) scored 11 points and Derek Webb (Western Wash. Univ.) contributed 8 for the Blue Angels.
The Eagles will be back in action on Monday, Oct. 22 and Tues., Oct. 23 when they host Vancouver Island University in a two game series. Monday’s game is slated for 7 p.m. while Tuesday will be an afternoon game at 3 p.m., so the team from Nanaimo, BC, can catch the ferry back to Vancouver Island.
