KIRKLAND,Wash. – Northwest University used 27 points by Michael Russo along with strong offensive rebounding to power past Walla Walla University, 72-59, tonight in a non-conference contest.
Walla Walla stayed close in the first half as Miguel Martinez led the Wolves with 14 points in the period. Northwest would pull ahead to take a slim, 36-33, halftime lead aided by 8 offensive rebounds giving them second shot opportunities.
In the second half, The Eagle defense would clamp down and limit Walla Walla to 26 points and just 9 field goals. Northwest would grab 6 more offensive rebounds in the period which would contribute to their 36 point half and lift them to their 8th win of the season against two defeats.
NU’s (8-2) Michael Russo hit 8 for 13 for the game and 7 of his 10 three point attempts for his game high 27 points. Michael Greene scored 16 points and Ryan Dornik scored 9 points. Nemanja Grujicic had a game high 6 offensive rebounds for the Eagles while scoring 8 points on the night.
Walla Walla (0-11) was led by Miguel Martinez’s 22 points while teammate Tristan Greenidge contributed 17 points for the Wolves. WWU shot 51% for the game.
“Our guys really showed some persistence on the glass tonight with their 14 offensive rebounds,” said Coach John Van Dyke of the Eagles. “We also did a better job defensively on Martinez in the second half and their team as a whole. Anytime you can limit a team to 9 field goals in a half, it’s showing a positive team effort on defense.”
Northwest U. will now travel to Parkland next week to play Pacific Lutheran on Tues., Nov. 27.
