Geoducks Come From Behind to Down Eagles

OLYMPIA, Wash. - The Evergreen State College came back from a ten point halftime deficit to down the NU Eagles, 55-46, in the conference opener for both teams tonight in the CRC Gymnasium.

After shooting a dismal 13.8% on 4 for 29 shooting in the first half, the Geoducks heated up in the second half on 52% shooting to erase the Eagle lead. The first half was a different story for the Eagles who 40% of their shots including 3 of 5 (60%) from beyond the three points arc. A jumper by Carley Davis and two free throws by Alyssa Dario would put NU up 19-9 with 9:02 to go in the first half. Dario would then nail a jumper with 59 seconds remaining to increase the Eagle lead to 12 points, 25-13. Evergreen would hit two free throws to pull to within 8 with just 30 seconds on the clock, but Dario would answer once again with a jumper with 6 ticks on the clock to give NU the 27-17 halftime lead.

Ashley Coila would give NU their largest lead of the second half with her jumper just 30 seconds into the period to put NU up 29-17, but the Geoducks would then begin to chip away at the Eagle lead. Danielle Swain would score in the paint to cut the NU lead to 5 points, 29-24, at the 15:54 mark. After an Eagle turnover, Jessica Denmon would drop a jumper to make it a one point ball game, 29-28, at the 14 minutes mark. After NU’s Jordan Asher would make it a 3 point edge for NU, ESC would tie the game 33-33, on a 3 point play by Jessica Edge as she would hit her shot and a free throw with 12:07 remaining in the game. After two lead changes and the game tied at 43-43, Evergreen would take the lead for good after three free throws by Sammi Clarke and a field goal by Danielle Swain to make it 48-43 at the 5:37 mark. The Eagles would go cold hitting only 1 of 7 shots down the stretch.

Alyssa Dario led Northwest U. (0-6, 0-1 CCC) with 11 points while teammate Jordan Asher added 7 points. Carley Davis added 6 points and Corinne Burke had a game high 9 assists for the Eagles. NU shot 32% for the game.

Evergreen (1-1, 1-0 CCC) was led by Danielle Swain’s game high 17 points and 9 rebounds while Sammi Clarke had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Jessica Denmon added 10 points for the Geoducks who shot 33% for the game and managed 7.7% shooting from the 3 point line (1 for 13). Evergreen out rebounded Northwest 45-38, including 16 offensive rebounds.

Northwest U. will return home and will host Pacific Lutheran next Friday, Dec. 7 in the first game of a doubleheader. Game time is 5:20 p.m.
