Lone Goal Defeats Eagles

PORTLAND, Ore. - Warner Pacific scored in the 6th minute of the game today and it was all that was needed as the Knights defeated the Eagles, 1-0, in a Cascade Conference contest.

Warner Pacific’s Jameson Jones gathered a deflection at 5:46 and and put it in from 10 yards out for the only score of the game. The defense took over for the remaining 84 minutes as both teams had a combined 19 shots. NU managed two shots on goal as WPC’s goalie, Drew Bonafacio saved both and Joe Galbraith had 4 saves in goal for the Eagles.

The Eagles had scoring chances with free kicks, as the Knight defense gave away several fouls at the edge of their penalty area, but NU could not capitalize on the opportunities.

The best chance for the NU in the second period came in the 52st minute as Daniel Paull’s header attempt hit the post, then was cleared by the Knight defense. Warner Pacific also missed chances to add to their lead, with Celebic rattling the woodwork on a powerful shot in the 61st minute. Northwest’s Mackenzie Samuelsen had a shot at the 60:08 mark in the second half that was saved by Warner Pac’s Bonafacio.

NU pressed forward in the final moments, searching for the equalizer but the Knight defense held firm and secured the hard-fought victory.

Warner Pacific (4-5, 3-2 CCC) just edged Northwest (5-3-1, 3-2 CCC) in shots, 11-8 and had four corner kicks to the Eagles’ 3. Mackenzie Samuelsen led NU with 3 shots for the game.

“We made a key mistake in the back today and it cost us,” stated Gary McIntosh, Eagle head coach. “We need to get better on not making mistakes and capitalizing on our opportunities.”

Northwest U. will now return to Kirkland after two straight on the road and will host Evergreen on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on the NU Athletic Field.
