KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University’s senior captain Stephanie Cummins scored in the 86th minute to break a 1-1 tie and give the Eagles a 2-1 victory over Northwest Christian in CCC play. The Eagles also snapped Northwest Christian’s three game CCC win streak as they came into today’s game 3-0.
Northwest U. took a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute after Rachel Saleen scored on a penalty kick. It looked as though the lead would hold up as the clock ticked down, but NCU came back and answered with Mishalya Bertelsen’s 12 yarder at the 83:42 mark. She gathered a teammates blocked shot and scored from 12 yards out on the left side.
Cummin’s game winner came off Jordyn Wilson’s corner kick from the right side as he headed in the pass 8 yards out on the right side. Cummins had an earlier header for a goal disallowed in the first half as NU was whistled for a foul.
Northwest U. (3-8-2, 2-1-1 CCC) outshot Northwest Christian (5-5-2, 3-1 CCC) 19-10. Kristen Fulbright had 7 saves in goal for NCU. Northwest’s Patty Hughes made a key save in the 68th minute as Bertelsen had a direct shot from 18 yards away and Hughes held on to her blast which would have tied the game.
“We are happy with the result for sure,” stated NU head coach, Erin Redwine. “We weren’t as sharp as we needed to be in the first half, but I’m glad the team turned it around in the second. Rachel (Saleen) was a leader today and Stephanie’s (Cummins) goal was solid and came when we needed it most.”
