Redhawks Sweep Eagles in Exhibition

Redhawks Sweep Eagles in Exhibition

SEATTLE, Wash. - The NU Eagles ran into a very good Seattle U. team this afternoon, dropping a doubleheader 9-1 and 15-0 at Logan Field in Seattle. The game was an exhibition for Northwest U. and will not count on their regular season record. It was the season home opener for Seattle U.

Game 1: Richelle Ashburn threw a one hitter, striking out 8, as Seattle U. defeated the Eagles 9-1 in 5 innings in the first game of their exhibition doubleheader. The weather was in the high 40’s but cooperated with just overcast skies and occasional sunshine as the Redhawks, members of the NCAA Division I Western Athletic Conference, scored three runs in the bottom of the first as two in the second to take an early 5-0 lead.

NU got their lone run of the game in the 5th inning after Lauren Robinson walked and took second on a passed ball. Hannah Ganfield came up with a clutch base hit which scored Ganfield from second. Seattle U. scored 2 more runs in the 4th and 5th innings for the victory.

Game 2: An 11 run, 8 hit 3rd inning was the downfall of the NU Eagles in the second game of their doubleheader as they fell 15-0 to Seattle University in 5 inning this afternoon. The big hit was SU’s Bubba Morrow’s grand slam home run which was good for four of the Redhawks runs in the inning. SU also scored 1 in the first, 2 in the second and one run in the bottom of the 4th inning as they banged out 15 hits for the day.

NU was held to just two hits by SU pitcher Jessica Ulrich. Vanessa Ahrendt and Lynzee Halcott got the two hits for the Eagles. Vanessa Ahrendt took the loss for the Eagles on the mound.

“It was a very rough day for our young team,” said John Bacon, NU head coach. “They had some brilliant moments; we will build upon those to continue to make headway as a program. This is just the first year of a four year plan. Even though we have difficulties to overcome, I am extremely proud of the players and their fortitude.”

The Eagles have a bit of a break before they take on NCAA Division II St. Martin’s in Olympia on Mar. 3 and finally play their first game at home when they open conference play against Corban in a doubleheader on Friday, March 8 at Everest Park in Kirkland.
