John Van Dyke

Position: Head Coach

Entering into his 13th season leading the Eagles, head coach John Van Dyke has guided the program steadily up the ladder to the place where it now ranks annually among the leaders in the highly-regarded Cascade Conference and the NAIA. Van Dyke was named the Cascade Conference Coach of the Year for 2011-12 and his Eagles were quarterfinalists at the 2012 NAIA Division II National Championships in Missouri and conference co-champions. It was the third trip to the nationals under Coach Van Dyke’s guidance which includes a final four finish in 2007.

But perhaps even more importantly, Van Dyke has discovered that the measuring stick of his tenure at Northwest extends far beyond the basketball court. “When I stop to consider the quality of education that our student athletes will receive at Northwest University and combine it with the spiritual and social climate of our campus community, I can’t help but think how special it is to be part of something so significant. The opportunity to be involved in the lives of the guys on the team and watching them grow is very satisfying.”

Van Dyke believes that trust, hard work and being a great teammate are key ingredients to the success of the men’s basketball program at Northwest University. “Although we are not perfect, we strive to represent our basketball program and University in such a way that all associated with our basketball family can be proud. I believe that integrity and character matter most and when combined with talent and work ethic, success will follow.

“Our program has been very fortunate in bringing in young men who have deep-rooted Christian values, who just also happen to be high-quality basketball players,” Van Dyke says. “It is my goal for the program to recruit, retain and graduate young men who fit the culture of our school, value their education and want to win a National Championship. That is something that I feel gets closer every year.”

John and his wife Amy have been married for 22 years and have two children, Alysanne (16) and Jack (14). They reside in Edmonds. John is a graduate of King’s High School in Seattle and he played his college basketball at Seattle Pacific University. He is a graduate of Western Washington University (‘92).
