TUKWILA, Wash. - In front of the largest crowd of the season, the Sounders Women notched a crucial 2-1 victory over Santa Clarita to keep their playoff hopes alive in the W-League of USL Soccer. The top 2 teams in the Western Conference will play for a spot in the national Final Four and this victory gives the Sounders 11 points, equal with the Colorado Rush.
A goal and an assist from NU's Erin Redwine highlight the score sheet, but the victory was a team performance. Intent was shown from the Sounders from the opening kick as they dominated the first 20 minutes of play. Santa Clarita found it difficult to escape their own half of the field, but Seattle’s chances were sprayed over and wide of the net.
After the first 32 minutes, the Sounders had tallied 9 shots. The best chance came in the 27th minute on a free kick from the right side of the box. Tafara Pulse and Justi Baumgardt-Yamada worked a nice free kick to swing in a cross to the goal mouth. Erin Frushon, the Blue Heat’s 1st half keeper got to the ball first but it snuck through her grip and trickled barely past the outside of the post.
A few minutes later, the home team would get the break-through. A long diagonal pass from Pulse found a hard charging run by the Sounders’ right outside back, Kelli Smith. Smith was able to beat the ball to the endline and cross it back to the middle. Redwine challenged an opposing defender and got enough on her header to knock the ball through the goalkeeper’s save attempt for goal number one.
