Dr. LeRoy Johnson Named Meritorious Professor

Dr. LeRoy Johnson became the first faculty member appointed to the rank of Meritorious Professor by the Northwest University Board of Directors.

The official presentation was made at the Academic Convocation on September 1, 2010. During the presentation, Provost Jim Heugel explained the award bestowed upon Dr. Johnson:

The rank of Meritorious Professor awards special recognition to faculty members who have rendered outstanding service to the University through their exemplary service as teachers and mentors. These faculty members exhibit the highest standards in character, leadership, and Christian maturity as evidenced by their extraordinary influence upon the lives of students, staff, faculty, administration, and alumni, and also by their exemplary service to the University outside the classroom.

Dr. Johnson began his career at Northwest University in 1967, as a professor of history. His commitment to Northwest is also evidenced in his involvement outside the classroom, including his service on governance committees, tenure as assistant basketball coach, regular attendance in chapel, and participation in the life of the student body.

President Joseph Castleberry presented the award to Dr. Johnson and commended him for his "commitments to high quality teaching, to service to the institution, and to promoting fair treatment of faculty and students."

President Castleberry concluded the presentation by recognizing that "no single individual is held in higher regard by his peers, the board, the administration, the student body, and alumni."
