Olson graduated from Northwest U in 1981 after competing in four years of collegiate volleyball and two seasons of basketball at the school. A setter, outside hitter, and team captain in volleyball, Olson was a two-time all-conference selection and was named a National Little College Athletic Association First Northwest All-American in her senior year. She was also a member of the inaugural season of women’s basketball at the university and played two seasons for the Eagles.

The Eagles defeated Baptist Bible of Pennsylvania 85-69 for the title, with NU hall of famer Wes Davis being named the tournament MVP and Pete Maravich Award winner. Both Davis and teammate Jason Filan were named to the all-tournament team. Davis was also named a first team All-American, Erik Konsmo a 2nd team All-American, and Brock Baker earned honorable mention All-American honors.
