Every year Northwest University Dr. Peg Achterman teaches Mass Communication, she gives her students the unique opportunity to see media production in action at KING 5 television station in downtown Seattle. With over 17 years as a former TV news photographer, Dr. Achterman knew her students could benefit from an inside look at the broadcast journalism industry.
This semester, Dr. Achterman’s class witnessed the behind-the-scenes activities of the television talk show New Day Northwest, which is hosted by Margaret Lason and airs weekdays at 11:00am. Students got to sit in the live studio audience, ask questions about the execution of the show, and meet special guests featured on the program.
NU soccer players Edgar Esquivel, D.J. Bechtel, and other audience members enjoyed getting their photo taken with and hearing from Seattle Sounders soccer player Steve Zakuani, a guest from that morning.
A highlight of the trip for sophomore Meredith Tillery included the chance to model on live TV! New Day stylist Darcy Camden chose Tillery for a special fashion segment of the program to showcase clothing from the newly remodeled “Super Mall” in Auburn, WA, now known as The Outlet Collection. NU students were surprised and delighted to receive gift bags with coupons, fun accessories, and a $25 gift card to the Pacific Northwest's largest indoor outlet mall.
“I thoroughly enjoyed going behind-the-scenes of New Day. It was very intriguing. I enjoyed seeing what we have been learning about in the classroom in person. There are so many facets that are needed to create a TV show!” –Victoria Patterson, Student
“The New Day trip was an incredible opportunity for Northwest University students to get a hands-on look at how mass communication is implemented. We were able to see how fast-paced it is and how each person has a specific job in order to make the big picture function in the correct way. Chatting face-to-face with people who have jobs in journalism, PR, broadcasting, cameras, sports, and fashion made it applicable to students in many fields of study. Being part of the audience gave my peers and I the opportunity to network and be great representatives of our school and of our faith.” –Mara Danskin, Student
