Each week members of the Thursday Night Improv team put plenty of hard work and preparation before students pile into NU’s Millard Hall theatre for a night of laughs and memories. No one, including the cast members, know just what the night’s performance will bring - other than laughter. It’s a welcome break from the weekly grind of homework, campus jobs, and required internships.
Sci-Fi, Pajama Party, Nerds Alert, and Fancy Night are just a few of the themes that event-goers can look forward to. At Improv Night audience participation isn’t just encouraged, it’s expected. The night’s theme is announced a few days in advance and students come dressed for the occasion. During performances cast members routinely look to the crowd for inspiration, encouraging them to call out ideas and suggestions. And it’s not uncommon that some lucky volunteer may find him or herself on stage and part of the action. But it’s all part of the appeal; at Improv the spontaneity of the performance is the secret ingredient that makes the laughs more explosive, and the situational humor so memorable.
Thursday Night Improv is sponsored by the University’s Drama department, but as faculty proudly point out the program is an entirely student-run initiative. Click to learn more about Drama Program at NU, or the College of Arts & Sciences.
