The following services are available to assist students with career decisions, planning, and preparation:
Self-Directed Resources
A number of self-directed resources are available to students in The Counseling
Services Office, during regular office hours.
Fees and Scheduling: The majority of resources are available at no cost to the student; however, some licensed
and/or consumable materials will require a fee for use.

Career Development & Job Search Seminars
Career Services offers a weekly seminar that focuses on specific topics/skills
related to career exploration, planning, and job search skills. Examples of
topics presented include:

Twelve workshops are provided each semester. Workshops are not scheduled during Thanksgiving week (fall semester),
Easter week (spring semester), finals preparation week, or finals week.
Fees and Registration: There is no charge for participation in workshops. Certain workshops may require
advance registration and the completion of some pre-workshop materials therefore students must plan in advance.
Requirements for pre-registration and/or completion of pre-workshop exercises are included in the workshop descriptions
and can be found on the Career Services web page and on Career Services bulletin boards.

Career Exploration and Decision Making Groups
Each semester Counseling Services offers small groups structured to provide
opportunities for students to participate in a number of career exploration
and planning activities. The students will: (1) take a variety of career assessments
to help identify interests, personality preferences, and strengths (Strong
Interest Inventory, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Talent Discovery Guide, and
Strengths Finder); (2) identify work related values and the implications in
career planning; (3) discover and articulate their unique strengths and transferable
skills; (4) explore family of origin influences on career decision making;
(5) become familiar with the use of a career portfolio; and (6) understand
how to research career fields.
Content covered is applicable to freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors.
The groups meet for eight sessions and participation requires pre-registration.

Fees and Registration: There is no fee for participation in groups. However,
students who begin a group and then discontinue for any reason will be charged
a $50.00 cancellation fee to cover the cost of materials distributed to them
and their cancellation of a previously reserved space in the group. Advance
scheduling and registration for groups is required. Students may register through
The Counseling Center (Ext. 5282).
Career Development Group
This group will help you develop an understanding and ability to articulate your interests, abilities, strengths,
personality style, and values. You will take a number of assessment tools and participate in a variety of career
exploration activities that will assist you in making well thought through decisions about your education and career
path. Following are some of the career instruments used in the Career Development Groups:
- The Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assesses personality preferences and provides understanding of how
your personality type can help you in career planning.
- The Strong Interest Inventory provides you with a descriptive code based on your reported interests. This
code is them matched with general occupational themes and basic interest scales to help you select a major and identify
careers that you may want to explore.
- The Values Driven Work Inventory assists you in determining what you value in your work environment, work
tasks, and relationships in the work place.
- The Strengths Finder assessment helps you to identify, develo p, and apply your talents to increase your success in academics, learning, leadership, careers, and relationships.

- Talent Discovery Guide is a helpful tool in discovering your natural talents, evaluating past enjoyable
experiences and comparing them to 54 talent areas, and determining your preferences in the areas of communication
talents, relationship talents, and functional talents.
- Dependable Strength Articulation (DSA) process enables individuals to identify and articulate their core
abilities, talents, positive traits, and skills –their primary dependable strengths. They come to know their
“best” self and apply this self knowledge to career planning, job finding, team building, managing change,
and increasing overall life satisfaction. The DSA process has been used with churches, schools, Harvard Business
School, Microsoft, and other organizations.

Individual Counseling
Counseling Services provides counseling to assist students with assessment
and discovery in order to increase understanding of their interests and strengths,
a foundational component in the decision making process regarding career direction.
A number of career assessment tools are available including the Strong Interest
Inventory, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Talent Discovery Guide, and Strengths
Finder. Participation in counseling sessions requires a time investment and
commitment to complete assignments in preparation for the next counseling appointment(s).
Fees and Scheduling: There is no charge for counseling sessions however there is a charge for some test instruments
and consumable materials. This charge will be discussed with the student prior to the expense being incurred. Counseling
sessions must be scheduled in advance.
