Do you have a good photo of something happening with friends, fellow students, or family? Send it to us, and we may use it on the web site or in print!
What Makes A Good Photo?
There are several elements that go into creating a good photo. Not every element is necessary for every photo, but as you consider a photo or photos to submit, think about these guidelines:
- The subject should be in focus. Most of the time we're looking for photos with a student or students in the scene, and if the photo is blurry, usually it's unusable. Shows like CSI would like you to believe there's a magic button in some software program that will make blurry objects crystal clear. Unfortunately, there is no such tool.
- There should be some context for the scene. For example, if you went to a sporting event, it would be good to be able to see some of the event going on in the background.
- The scene should be framed well. Photos with important things missing due to the camera's point of view (like half of your roommate's face, for example), generally aren't usable. Some cameras allow you to lock your focus on the subject, then recompose the photo so the subject is in the left or right-hand side of the picture (yet still in focus). If your camera doesn't have this feature, that's all right, but many times what makes a good photo even better is how the subject is framed in the photo.
- The photo should be of a recent event. Usually, we post photos on the web site of events that have occured within the past few days or, occasionally, weeks. Publications are on a different timeline, but generally the features have been picked in advance and those featured are contacted directly for their photo submissions or to be photographed in person.
- Some rules are made to be broken. If your photo doesn't seem to fit into any of the above categories, but you still feel it is worth review, send it to us anyway. We will review it.
Examples of Photos
You don't have to look far to see what kind of photos we use in printed publications and on the web. However, we would like to highlight some examples:
