Background information

Gary Newbill serves Northwest University as Professor of Education and Dean of the School of Educationl.

Dr. Newbill previously served six Washington school districts in a variety of roles: high school history teacher, general counsel (attorney), personnel director, and the assistant superintendent for human resources, instruction, finance, and operations. For eleven years he led two systems as their chief executive. Upon completing his public career as a district superintendent, Gary Newbill joined the graduate faculty of educational leadership at Seattle Pacific University, preparing principal and superintendent candidates for state certification and graduate degrees. He then moved to Northwest University to head its teacher preparation program.

Professor Newbill has served as a guest lecturer in education for Seattle University, the University of Washington, Seattle Pacific University, and Cape Theological Seminary (South Africa), and has taught several graduate and undergraduate courses, including foundations of education, instructional design, supervision of instruction, professional growth planning, personnel administration, faith integration, legal issues, and student teaching seminar.

In addition to individual presentations, Dr. Newbill has teamed with his wife Karen Newbill, M.Ed., and their daughter Kari Lannon, M.A., to present workshops nationally on brain-compatible teaching and learning strategies at “Learning Brain Expos” in San Diego and Chicago and regionally at a daylong conference for Christian school teachers and administrators held in Seattle.

A law graduate of the University of Washington and an attorney, Gary Newbill is licensed to practice in Washington State. He also holds professional education certificates as a teacher (K-12), principal (P-12), and superintendent. Early professional experience included a combat tour in Vietnam and active and reserve duty in the United States Marine Corps (1962-1976), where he attained the rank of major.
