Library Student Assistant

Department: Hurst Library
  • Reports to: Circulation Manager
  • Number of Positions: 2

Position Summary

Attends to library tasks including:  shelving, shelf reading, checking materials in and out, attending to the circulation desk, processing library materials, performing inventory related tasks, and providing service to library patrons.  This is a student worker position and is limited to no more than twenty hours per week when classes are in session.

Working Environment:

  • Work is generally performed indoors in a typical office setting
  • Weekend/evening work required
  • Position works with some confidential information
  • Frequently required to be in front of a computer screen for long periods of time


Essential Functions

  1. Sorts and shelves materials
  2. Shelf reads assigned areas, searches for lost and missing items
  3. Keeps the library and student work areas in order
  4. Assists at circulation desk including charging, renewing, discharging materials, and assists in processing new materials, holds, and interlibrary loans
  5. Answers patron questions and performs basic service on printers, copiers, and computers
  6. Answers basic service/directional questions
  7. Performs basic cleanup and mending tasks and special projects as assigned
  8. Performs other work-related duties as assigned
  9. Performs opening and closing procedures daily


  1. Must be currently enrolled at NU
  2. Must have excellent attention to detail, the ability to follow complex instructions and have good hand-eye coordination
  3. Be able to use a mouse, scanner and keyboard on a computer
  4. Basic experience in Microsoft Word and Excel
  5. Demonstrate commitment to maintaining a safe work environment free of harassment, violence, and unlawful discrimination
  6. Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, or by email, and maintain professional interaction with co-workers and patrons


Estimated 10-15 hours per week.  Usual hours between 7:30am - 11:30pm, Every week day.
