Master of Education

This program will help you reach two goals simultaneously – you can earn the Master of Education degree and also earn the Washington State Professional Teacher Certificate.

Purpose

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) is a two-year, continuing education program for teachers holding the Residency Teacher Certificate, the entry level licensure in Washington State. Within five to seven years of completing entry level certification, the practicing teacher must qualify for the Professional Teacher Certificate. Though a graduate degree is not required for the second and final certificate, a masters and certification are often pursued simultaneously.

Goal

The Northwest University M.Ed. and Professional Certification program is designed to serve three practicing teacher populations:

  • Bachelors graduates holding the Residency Teacher Certificate who seek the M.Ed. degree and the Professional Certificate
  • Bachelors graduates holding the Residency Teacher Certificate who seek the Professional Certificate only
  • Master in Teaching or other masters graduates holding the Residency Teacher Certificate who seek only the Professional Certificate

Scope

Built around the second level of licensure, the two-year,
thirty-credit curriculum offers preparation for the Washington State Professional Teacher Certificate, as well as advanced coursework on learning theory, educational standards, and research methodology, culminating in a graduate-level action research paper.

Scheduling

Classes meet in the evenings, on Saturdays, and during the summer months for cohorts commencing their programs in August.

Classes

Classes will be held on the campus of Northwest University.

Faculty

Full-time professors will teach, advise, and supervise M.Ed. students, augmented by current practitioners and Northwest University faculty members teaching specialized courses.
