Environmental Science Major Spends Semester AbroadFebruary 9, 2004
As a part of the requirements for completing his Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, student Yuriy Semenyuk is spending a semester in Costa Rica, putting his knowledge and faith into practice in a foreign environment. A recent update in his own words can be read below. "I've been in Costa Rica for almost five weeks and I have enjoyed my stay. I see that God has lead me here for a purpose. I have received a blessing through spiritual growth and expansion of my world view. Through God's help I have also been able to bring a blessing to those around. Praise God for everything.
"I have just completed my Spanish classes - but the Spanish does not stop there - I have a good time socializing with my Costa Rican family and friends. I have tried some of the most strangest fruits that I never knew ever existed. The LASP program is stretching me to think deeper and better. I never expected that I would have such an experience so far away from home. Weekly, I have been helping a local church with a building project called 'The Abraham Project.' We are building orphanages and daycare centers for little kids. "Tomorrow I'm heading to Nicaragua to study there for two weeks and help the people there in anyway possible. Nicaragua is in a very bad environmental condition - they have 80% of the forest cut down, while Costa Rica has 1/3 of the country as a national forest. "The best part of the semester is coming up in a few weeks when I will get into the science field more intensively. I will be snorkeling to see the reefs, canopying, and camping by a volcano." |
