Debaters Bring Home Awards
January 31, 2005
Congratulations to Northwest University debate team captain Sara Boyd and her partner Nathan
Chambers for advancing to finals and winning a Quarter finalist trophy this weekend at the Pacific University
Debate tournament in Forest Grove, Oregon.
38 colleges and universities attended the three day contest of wit and speaking skill with 42 teams in junior division.
Boyd and Chambers were the tenth seeded team going into finals out of 42. They won the Octofinals round (top 16
teams), debating against renewing a military draft, then lost in quarterfinals debating against eliminating debt
for developing nations in Africa.
Boyd and Chambers have broken to finals at every tournament that they have attended.
Congratulations also to Evan Muxen and Kortney Thoma for winning an Octofinals
debate award in junior division.
Topics were announced twenty minutes before each round. Students had to be prepared to debate both sides of any
controversial issues. Other topics included the powers of the presidency, imposing democracy, controls on the mass
media and corporate ethics.
Thanks to assistant coach and alumnus Mercy Novak for judging for the weekend.
The next debate will be international competition when the Eagles cross the northern border to debate at the University
of British Columbia's Pacific Cup tournament the weekend of February 18.
