Northwest Student Among Top Alaskan Youth

Kirkland, November 22, 2005

Tiffany Zulkosky, a Communication major at Northwest University, will represent Alaskan youth at a historic commemorative weekend event next year.

In honor of the 50th anniversary of Alaska’s Constitutional Convention and its 55 delegates, 55 young Alaskans were chosen to meet at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, for the Conference of Young Alaskans on January 13-16.

The delegates will consider five challenges facing the state: providing quality education, developing healthy communities and families, creating leaders for Alaska’s next generation, being responsible for developing natural resources, and reviving the Alaska dream and “Last Frontier” spirit.

Tiffany -- a 21 year old native Alaskan from Bethel -- was chosen from among 400 who applied for this all expense paid event. Tiffany reports that she is "bubbling over with excitement" since learning that she was selected for this honor. At the convention she will have the opportunity to network with many future leaders and begin fulfilling a dream of taking part in public service in her state.

Conference delegates will draft policy statements and proposed action to be submitted to Alaska’s current leaders. They will be charged to participate with the nonpartisan and cooperative civic spirit that characterized the real convention 50 years ago.

“The young people chosen as delegates to this important gathering are very likely going to be among the next generation of leaders that will take Alaska far into this millennium,” University of Alaska President Mark Hamilton said.
