Before You Come

Hey all, good to have you back! Many of you are in the process of applying and coming to NU, so I thought I would offer some advice about coming to college and NU specifically.

First, be honest about the transition. Going to any college is a new experience. The time between acceptance and arrival is filled with a ton of different emotions. For some, it is filled with excitement for a new season, or to just get out of the house. For others, it is a terrifying time filled with uncertainty and discomfort centered on change. Whether you stand on the left, right, or middle, we all have to walk through this change together. Be honest with where you are at. Talk to your parents about what you are thinking and expecting.

Second, be ready for new friendships. About now, every high school senior in the country is beginning to realize that they are graduating and that life is going to change. So it is the time when they reassure their BFF’s of the forevership of the friendship. Enjoy this time that you have with friends, and be ready to make a ton of new ones in college. Come to a Northwest Friday, NU Unplugged, and a Soar Day! While I was in high school, it was events like this where I met some of my best college friends. You’ll get to NU and within a week you’ll be overwhelmed with the amount of friends you have.

Last,  be smart about how you plan. Really, just watch your money! I know this sounds tedious, but I wish I would have been smarter about how I saved and spent money during my time in college. Talk to your roommate before you come. Plan togetherwhat you will buy. Don’t overpack! Buy a big tin and get more than enough of supplies to last you through the semester (ie: toothpaste, deoderant, gum, pens, etc.). Although it is costly upfront, but it saves money in the long run. Really, just think about what you need not what you want to buy. There’s never enough money to save in college.

There are tons of different thngs to to prep you for college, hopefully these ones help. Can’t wait to see you future Eagles!
