Hi everyone! Today I'll be writing to you about attending church while being a student at NU. I will be answering these three questions: 1. How did you choose which church to attend? 2. Is there time to attend and be involved in church while being a full time student? 3. NU students have chapel 3 times a week, so do students even go to church on Sundays?
1. First, I come from a relatively small church of about 200 regular attenders, and a youth group of 50 on a good night. I loved going to a small church because everyone knew everyone and my friends at youth group felt like family. So I was quite shocked when I moved to Kirkland and learned that most of the churches around the area had thousands of members. (However, please note that there are many small churches in the area, too, if you're looking for a small church.)
I've only visited two churches since moving to Northwest University and am now a member and regular attender of The City Church with Pastor Judah Smith. I chose to call this church home because I left every single Sunday service more in love with Jesus than when I walked in, and that seemed like a really good reason to keep going. I am so blessed by the way The City Church glorifies Jesus.
Because it was so overwhelming at first for me to attend such a large church I wasn't sure how to get plugged in, but last fall I decided to jump in with both feet and it has been so much fun! I started leading a city group of senior girls with a friend of mine from school, and I attend the high school youth group on Wednesday nights (Generation Church/GC).
2. Second, currently I devote three days a week to church (Monday's city group, Wednesday's youth group, and a Sunday church service). Although it can be hard to make time for church as a college student I think that it's all about priorities and communication. There are some nights that I'm unable to attend GC because I have a paper due that night or a midterm the next morning, but as long as I communicate that to my leaders and city group girls, it's completely understandable. However, if I make GC one of my top priorities, I'm going to go out of my way to study for the test or write the paper before Wednesday night so I can attend GC.
3. Third, although chapel is available to students three times a week I find that most students regularly attend church over the weekend. Not all students are leading/serving at church but most do attend. I find the parking lot is always empty on Sunday mornings.
It's also really fun to live with so many people involved in different avenues of church. Some of my friends at NU are involved with a recent church plant, some of my friends attend big churches, and a couple of my friends are involved in Young Life. There's a different avenue for everyone and it's really fun to be a part of.
