Over the past three years I've attended Northwest University, I have taken some of the most informative, engaging, and exciting classes that are available to college students. Some of my absolute favorites are classes that I've taken this year because I am finally immersing myself in my major!
While I had some classes as a freshman that were absolutely engaging and useful (like my History of Western Civilization class and my Christian Thought class), I was really excited to start taking electives and major courses. As a sophomore, I took Creative Writing, which challenged my ability to write from my imagination instead of from just my logical, rational tendency. I have always pursued creative writing as a hobby, but taking that class helped my hobby to grow into something more. The professor that taught that class also taught me a lot about being creative in general. She made the class feel like a creative art and activity instead of just a stuffy classroom with tedious lectures.
This year, I am taking cultural psychology. As an actual assignment, every student is supposed to fill a box with items that represents our individual cultures. Later in the semester, we will be able to present our boxes to our small, learning groups of eight or nine people. Also, as extra credit, we can bring a food from our culture to share with the class. So far we have had Starbucks coffee and Russian pastries. Yum! Plus, we learn incredible information on how cultural psychology affects every person and, for me, this relates to my communication major by helping me learn to communicate better with people of other cultures.
I am also taking Small Group Dynamics and Discussion this semester. In this class, we divided into four small groups and each group was assigned to come up with a project that will help others and impact a cause greater than ourselves. We actually get to complete these projects as part of class! This has been one of the coolest things I've ever been a part of! Stay posted, by the way. This project is going to affect potential incoming students and make the NU experience even better for you! More on this as it develops!
Some other classes that have really impacted how I communicate and interpret how others communicate were my Intro to Human Communication, Interpersonal Communication, and Mass Media. (Can you tell I love my major?!) NU definitely has something for everyone. I have many interests and I have been able to be in classes that are incredibly academically satisfying. I'm already excited for my senior year!
