Since my New Years resolution to health, I have been committed to a two week long raw food diet, where I have been trying to eat all of my food raw. (Not raw meat, of course. Just raw fruits, veggies, and nuts.) I only have a couple more days of raw eating, so today I decided to make a smoothie for breakfast. The ingredients included: half an avocado, half a banana, two large handfuls of spinach, a spoonful of raw peanut butter, and a good two cups of almond milk.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS RECIPE. It seemed like a good way to use up some of the aging stuff in my fridge. However, I barely got it down. Here's why: the almond milk and the avocado completely overtook the other ingredients with their bland flavor, the spinach didn't completely blend in my cheap blender, and it was about as thick as pudding. The only reason I choked it down was because I am a poor college kid and I was not going to waste my expensive produce by tossing it down the food disposal.
Smoothies are a great quick, easy, healthy breakfast for college students. And, believe it or not, spinach really is an ideal ingredient in smoothies. The key to making a good smoothie is fruit. I did not put nearly enough fruit in my smoothie. The main components to a good smoothie are: something to make it creamy (avocado, banana, Greek yogurt), something to give it a nutritional kick (spinach, kale, veggie powder), something to make it taste good (frozen berries, peaches, pineapple), ice, and, for an extra boost, protein powder.
So, here's hoping you learn from my mistake this morning! Now, I'm off to my second day of class.
