‘Ello everybody! My name is Bethany Porter and I am a freshman here at Northwest University. My intended major is Music Ministry, and I am looking at a minor in biblical studies. I am an out-of-state student and I call Sacramento, California my home. I have spent my whole life up until now living in Sacramento! Moving up here to Kirkland has been a big step, or bound, for me.
I first discovered my knack for writing when I was in fourth grade. In a parent-teacher conference, my teacher, Ms. Muzio, was expressing to my mother how she had read my own short story to her own mother over the phone and it had made her emotional. Ever since then, I have always found writing to be the best way in which I communicate the ideas, emotions and experiences that float around in my brain.
Right up there with writing is my passion for music! I had never really gotten serious about music until I was twelve years old and began to learn the guitar and sing in my middle school’s Christmas and Easter concerts. During high school I discovered jazz and was a part of a vocal jazz ensemble throughout those four years. It became apparent that this was a place where I could effectively minister to people. As I discovered this calling in my life, it was repeatedly confirmed through various experiences and people. Naturally, my love for writing and music intertwined and in my free time I am usually writing songs, playing music or writing down various inspirations.
Besides all that other stuff, you can usually find me in trees, barricaded up in the Amundsen music center practice rooms, or greeting you in an operatic voice at NU’s student-led worship gathering Pursuit on Monday evenings. Speaking of NU activities, being a freshman I am still discovering what places I can contribute my skills to and grow in them. The involvements that I have really found myself fitting into are the P.U.S.H. (Pray Until Something Happens) prayer team who meet together and prayer for general or specific prayer needs for students. I love helping out with the weekly Pursuit worship nights whether it is by doing small little things or greeting people as they walk in the door. The other major activity in which I take part is Life Groups! My friend Mercedes and I co-lead a life group called “Women Set-apart”, and we meet together with lovely ladies each week to discuss what it really means to be pure and discover our roles as women of God. Lastly, I am in NU’s gospel choir Choralons! We are a huge choir of 120 students that travels around Washington and this spring we are going to Las Vegas, Nevada, to minister at various churches! Other things I hope to get more involved in are the outreach Life Groups: Embargo and Lighthouse; and, eventually be on one of the chapel worship teams (which would be ideal, considering my major).
The question that you may be pondering in your mind, it sure was in mine before I became an NU blogger, is what does a freshman, who does not even originate in Washington or have any previous college experience have to say about a school she just began attending a few months ago? That is the very thing ladies and gentlemen that will make my being on this team of bloggers so very unique! I bring a different perspective than my elder blogger friends. You will be with me as I venture out into college life for the very first time as I uncover all that Northwest University and Washington have to offer.
My posts will be exploratory in the sense that I will be a little freshman venturing out to try big, new things and meet new people; so, whenever you see my name appear on this page, you will be stepping into my inexperienced shoes. I tend to combine the serious with the humorous in my writing and use many figures of speech when I am trying to describe an abstract idea. Be prepared from time to time to read bizarre similes that somehow work, asides enclosed in parentheses (is not that the truth?), and whimsical anecdotes. I will mostly be writing about my experiences at various NU activities such as Pursuit, Drama productions or simply day-to-day life (i.e. classes, “the Caf," dorms, and Seattle adventures). I look forward to hearing your responses and answering your questions!
