Meet the Blogger: Kalynn Brown

My name is Kalynn (kay-linn) Brown, but most of my friends call me Kaly (kay-lee). I am named after my Grandfather, Klynn, who was an architect before he retired. I am a junior here at NU, majoring in Communications with a concentration in Organizational Communication, which is slightly ironic because I am far from organized. I hail from Shelby, Montana, a very rural town with a population of about 3,000 people. I was homeschooled until my freshman year of high school, and, as a freshman, I attended a school thirty miles north. My class of 10 was a pretty big culture shock to me, but the next year, I attended school in my hometown and my class of 40 was an even bigger shock. I loved it though, and got involved with several extracurriculars, including drama club, cheerleading, and newspaper.

After graduating, I headed to NU because this is where I felt that I could grow the most, both academically and spiritually, and because this school offered me the most opportunity for my future with the programs that they offer. I currently write for our university’s newspaper/magazine, the Talon. I love to write and this has given me a great outlet for my creativity. I also enjoy pouring myself out into my academics—I love my major and every class I’ve taken has proven to be useful and thought-provoking.

As a college student, I have many interests and hobbies. I love to cook—I try to bake something every weekend. My current obsession is pumpkin! In the past month, I’ve made two pumpkin cheesecakes, pumpkin cupcakes, pumpkin oatmeal, and pumpkin pancakes. I’m also very interested in healthy living (ha! I feed my roommates all my desserts and make myself the healthy food!). I love the outdoors and I love traveling, although the farthest I’ve been from Montana is Ocean Shores, a little town on the Washington coast that I visited on my floor retreat last year. That was my first time seeing the ocean, and I’ve been aching to go back ever since. Finally, I love to write, and that is why I want to blog for the university. Being able express my thoughts is important to me, and I want other people to be able to benefit from my thoughts.

As a blogger, I want to give you a window to my life as a student at NU. I also want you to be able to get a realistic view of student life as you prepare to further your education. I’m pretty candid and frank. I’m not very good at sugarcoating things, but I’m also opportunistic and optimistic about my life, surroundings, and future. Life is the longest thing I’ll ever do, so I’m doing it to the best of my abilities.
