The focus composition is determined through advising and may be completed with suitable agencies off campus. Examples of AgenciesNorthwest University is affiliated with the Au Sable Environmental Studies Institute, which is a participant with the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU). Credits at Au Sable are treated like classes taken at Northwest. There are campuses in Michigan, Washington, India, Africa, and Kenya. Northwest also has opportunities for semester-long tropical biology experiences in Costa Rica with Target Earth and in Florida with ECHO. Environmental MissionsThere are opportunities to work with developing countries in areas such as agriculture, water treatment, stove construction, and more! Research ProjectsEnvironmental science majors are encouraged to work closely with Northwest University faculty on research projects. Students and faculty work in tandem to develop valuable research skills. The development of these skills prepares students for careers in the environmental field and/or graduate school. InternshipsLinking classroom time with workplace research experience makes internships and practica a crucial part of environmental science education. Whether through the Au Sable Institute internship program or working with an environmental consulting firm, these experiences provide graduates the edge needed for today's competitive job market. Summer WorkSummer is a valuable time for continued educational development. Students can work with the United States Forest Service studying grizzly bears, cougars and other large mammals, work with environmental firms in the Seattle area, or travel to Costa Rica and study tropical rainforests. The Au Sable Environmental Studies Institute also continues to offer classes during the summer months. |
