Overview

The Bachelor of Music in Music Education prepares students for Washington State Certification in teaching, and qualifies them to teach choral, instrumental, or general music in grades K-12. Graduates of this program will be qualified to teach music in either the public or private schools of Washington along with states that accept Washington certification on a reciprocal basis. Depending on the track(s) chosen, this will mean endorsement(s) in choral music, instrumental music, and/or general music. Specifically, graduates of this program should be able to:

  • Organize, recruit, rehearse, and direct performing ensembles in grades K-12, utilizing appropriate repertoire for elementary, middle, and high school.
  • Teach courses in general music, music history, music appreciation, or music theory.
  • Assist local schools in extra-curricular productions involving music, such as musicals, parent-teacher meetings, commencement, etc.;
    Instruct or direct students to sources of private instruction in piano, band, orchestra instruments, and voice.
  • Involve students in festivals, honor groups, and other cooperative efforts with their peers within the school district and in remote locations.
  • Advise music students in the areas of college and career choices.

The baccalaureate degree is completed when the student finishes the required 125 academic credits. The Washington State Teacher Credential requirements are met when the Student Teaching post-baccalaureate work (15 credits) is successfully completed.
