Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology students and at Northwest University prepare to serve their communities as licensed counselors. Their professors draw from their academic studies and professional experience to provide students with the background they will need to be significant in the field of counseling psychology. Students learn through lectures, discussion, and research, then they put their new knowledge to work in their internship or thesis, all guided by their professors. The program has a unique multicultural focus. The instructors seek to equip their students to serve individuals from different backgrounds and with widely different needs. Students come to understand that their expertise as counselors will only be complete when they have cultivated an attitude of compassion and respect for their clients. The program is designed to accommodate busy schedules: classes meet evenings and weekends, so most students can keep working at their jobs. Also, the program only takes two years to complete. Students find support and encouragement in their “cohort,” a small group of students that remains a unit throughout the program. Students in a cohort attend the same classes, study together, and discuss the topics from their courses.
