Area Coordinator - Residence Halls (Male Preferred)

The Area Coordinator will provide administrative and relational leadership within a residence hall in order to develop a Christ centered living, learning community. The 10 month live-in AC position begins the first week of August and ends the last week of May. A minimum commitment of 2 years and a maximum commitment of 6 years to the position are highly encouraged to help provide sustainability and effectiveness for the Residence Life team, as well as to allow for growth and advancement opportunities.
1. Role Model/Mentor:
- Demonstrates an active Christian commitment, serving as a counselor, advisor, role model and facilitator of student development.
- Provides counseling and advising for residents in areas of personal adjustment, relationship with God and others, and academic interests and success.
- Communicates effectively and courteously with others including students, administration, employees, parents, guests, and the public in a spirit of respect, trim work and customer service.
- Is intentionally visible and available in assigned living area and on campus.
- Attends chapel regularly and engage in student spiritual formation.
- Provides leadership and supervision for Resident Assistants
- Assists in interviewing, selecting, evaluating, training, teaching, and developing a team of RAs consisting of both men and women.
- Meets individually and corporately with RA team to provide counsel, encouragement, relationship, accountability and training.
- Trains and supervises the RA staff team as they facilitate the check-in and check-out process for the residence halls.
3. Community Builder:
- Facilitates residence hall programming for holistic student development that actively promotes the educational mission of NU's residence life program.
- Implements area programs
- Holds RAs accountable for the planning and facilitation of program expectations.
- Assists with crisis management, conflict resolution and mediation for students as needed.
4. Residence Administrator:
- Coordinates appropriate hall operations and procedures with the Director of Residence Life, Maintenance and Security to ensure a clean, safe, living environment for students.
- Facilitates check-in and check-out procedures within living area.
- Conducts bi-annual Health and Safety Checks in the residence halls.
- Collaborates with the Director of Residence Life and the Dean of Student Development in communicating and enforcing the student handbook and residence life policies.
- Responds to student conduct incident reports as assigned.
5. Team Member:
- Participates as a member of the Res Life Staff Team, one on one meeting with the Director of Residence Life and other training sessions and retreats.
- Participates as a member of the Student Development Team, engaging in team meetings and collaborating with Student Development colleagues.
- Participates in campus wide events including Orientation and promote the residential experience at Northwest Friday events.
- Serves as a resource and referral support to faculty, staff, parents and other University constituents.
- Participates in professional development opportunities [AC training, ACSD conference, other opportunities as they arise].
- Reads and applies relevant research.
7. Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
*Sample Work Schedule: The AC needs to plan a schedule that included the following:
- Attend weekly Res Life team staff meeting and weekly individual one on one meeting with the Director of Residence Life.
- Attend monthly Student Development team meetings.
- Facilitate weekly RA staff team meeting and weekly individual one on one meeting with each RA under your supervision.
- Lead and assist in teaching the student staff teams at weekly residence life class.
- Keep posted office hours for availability of 10 hours a week.
- Commit 10 hours a week to relationship building with residents in your living area.
- Arrange to be on-call approximately one weekend a month and share holiday responsibilities; share in responding to emergency situations as they arise.
- Bachelor’s Degree required in a related field; Master’s Degree preferred
- Undergraduate Residence Life experience required; professional Residence Life experience preferred
- Demonstrated leadership and nurturing skills
- Outstanding verbal and written interpersonal skills
- Proven ability to multi-task
- Self-directed, but able to work cooperatively as a team member
- Sound judgment, positive and flexible attitude, highly dependable
- Possesses current FA/CPR/BP/AED training certification, or willingness to obtain it at the first opportunity afforded by the University.
- Demonstrate commitment to maintaining a safe work environment free of harassment, violence, and unlawful discrimination
- Proven ability to communicate effectively, get along well with co-workers, and deal effectively and professionally with colleagues
