5 LinkedIn Best Practices

LinkedIn is the world’s most used professional networking site. Having a LinkedIn profile opens up a world of opportunity. However, in a job market full of qualified individuals, it’s important to set yourself apart. By following these five tips, you may catch the eye of someone who could help you land your dream job.

Choose the Right Photo

Your photo is the first thing people will see. Make sure you look responsible, friendly, and most of all, professional. No one can argue with a smiling, professional headshot. Yes, it’s important to stand out, but your profile picture isn’t the place to do so. Play it safe, and don’t risk standing out for the wrong reasons.

Boost Your Credibility

Fill in the summary section. It doesn’t have to be long. A concise statement about what you can do and how it will provide value is ideal. Some other LinkedIn musts include listing your professional skills, highlighting previous work experience, and accumulating recommendations.

Be Honest

Dishonesty on LinkedIn can lead to an awkward job interview. Be sure not to embellish. That being said, this is your time to shine. If you have done something impressive, don’t shy way from mentioning it. Be proud of your accomplishments and highlight them on your profile.

Join a Group

Become a part of the conversation by joining a group. LinkedIn groups are discussion forums where you can connect with people who share similar interests. You can share articles, ask questions, make contacts, and find jobs.

Connect with Alumni

LinkedIn allows you to search for other alumni. Sharing an alma mater goes further than you’d think in the professional world. Reach out, connect, ask for tips. Odds are, they will be more than willing to help. Who knows, maybe you’ll meet just the right person to assist you in getting where you want to be.
