Eun Young (Joy) Shin, a Northwest University student and budding journalist, made a splash with her news clip “Kimchi in The Caf,” which traveled overseas and landed on KTV-National Korean News.

Joy reported that Pioneer College Catering, Northwest University’s campus dining provider, was now serving kimchi, a traditional Korean dish, in The Caf at Northwest University. This menu change followed a successful proposal from international students and the NU Student Development department to make the NU Caf more welcoming and inviting to students from other countries. International students are raving about this touch of home and the chance to share their culture through food.

Joy is a senior exchange student from Gachon University in Seoul, South Korea, and is studying through The Center for English Language Education (CELE) at Northwest University. Joy dreams of being a journalist and has been pursuing this passion at Northwest as a writer for the NU student magazine, The Talon, and through searching for an off-campus journalism internship. Although classes have been tough, Joy has been thoroughly enjoying her semester of learning and growing at Northwest.

The Center for English Language Education (CELE) provides intensive academic English instruction to students from around the world with the goal of developing scholars, leaders, and international professionals. Students can enroll for full-time CELE ESL studies, or they can register for individual ESL courses based on their language needs. Students may be conditionally admitted into NU undergraduate and master’s degree programs contingent upon successful completion of the CELE program. CELE also has study abroad exchange partnerships with several Korean universities.

The Center for English Language Education wants its students to be successful both academically and socially during their time at NU. As illustrated by Joy, students pursue their passions and become fully involved in the NU community.
