Northwest University is Pleased to Host the Tlaloc—In Art and Culture Photographic Exhibit
In cooperation with the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Northwest University is pleased to host the Tlaloc—In Art and Culture Photographic Exhibit from September 21, 2015 through October 5, 2015 on the first floor of the Argue Health and Sciences Center.
The exhibit will open with a guest lecture by Dr. Maria Elena Ruiz Gallut on September 22, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. in the Argue Health and Sciences Center, Room 104.
Tlaloc—In Art and Culture Photographic Exhibit
This is a photographic exhibition of 35 images selected from more than 2,000 examples that integrate the image bank of Tlaloc, who was understood to be the god of rain; lord of rivers and springs; and creator of clouds, lightning, and thunder. In the history of Mesoamerican cultures, the face of Tlaloc has remained without major changes in many of the sacred spaces from other areas and different times, although his origin is in Teotihuacan. The photographs of this exhibition were taken from archeological pieces that are in many museums of Mexico and Central America. They are displayed in such a way that we will be able to see coincidences and differences present in the representations of the god Tlaloc among diverse Mesoamerican cultures.
Dr. Maria Elena Ruiz Gallut
Maria Elena Ruiz Gallut holds a Ph.D. in the History of Art from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where she works as a full-time researcher in the Institute of Aesthetic Researchers, specializing in Pre-Hispanic Art, particularly in the mural paintings of Teotihuacan and the deity Tlaloc. Since 2008, Dr. Gallut has led many projects for UNAM and has written several specialized articles about Teotihuacan's visual discourse, Tlaloc, and Pre-Hispanic Archaeoastronomy. She also teaches on the Faculty of Philosophy and Literature.
