Students Join World Vision to Aid Seattle Homeless and the Philippines

For the third year in a row, the students of Northwest University partnered with World Vision to build hygiene kits for those in need. This fall, students launched the “NU Gives” campaign, which directly impacted the local community and also assisted those overseas.

NU students worked with the Union Gospel Mission to hand-deliver kits to the homeless in Seattle. Half of the kits built were also sent to aid those devastated by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

Leading up to the “NU Gives” event, students spent weeks raising money to fill the kits with basic toiletries. Many of the supplies are simple, everyday objects that we might take for granted, such as shampoo, hand lotion, hand sanitizer, facial tissue, deodorant, disposable razor, shaving gel, brush, washcloth, toothbrush and toothpaste, etc. These kits will help thousands of people in the U.S. and the Philippines experience care and relief.

Distributing the Kits Through the Eyes of Students

“A group of over 40 Northwest University students took a break from their normal activities to spend time with the homeless around the streets of Seattle. Cold and somewhat nervous, the group was split into four different teams that canvassed the Seattle streets with workers from the Union Gospel Mission, armed with sandwiches, jackets, and hygiene kits. At the end of the night, many students shared how blessed they felt by the experience.” -David Kimball, Student

Had such a great time providing for a few basic physical needs and sharing conversation with the homeless in Seattle. #iheartNU

Personalized Notes with Every Kit Communicate Care

When asked about their experience, students also shared that one of the most impactful parts of the day was writing a personal note of encouragement, which is included in every kit and read by those who receive them.

We are extremely proud of our students for taking advantage of this opportunity, and for finding yet another way to make a difference in our world.
