Unlock Your Future With a Graduate Counseling Degree and Internship
Do you ever find yourself wondering if you’re on the right career path? Maybe you just graduated with your bachelor’s degree and are trying to figure out what comes next. Or maybe you were affected by a recent layoff and are rethinking your chosen field. Perhaps you’ve already achieved some significant career milestones in your current role but find yourself longing for something different—like an entirely new vocational purpose.
If you find yourself wrestling with some of these questions and are someone who is motivated by a strong sense of compassion and the desire to help others, you might consider a new career in the field of mental health counseling.
Mental Health Counseling: A Growing Career Choice
The need for well-equipped mental health counselors is significantly growing. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of mental health counselors is projected to grow by 25% between now and 2029—a much faster rate than the average for many other occupations. This growth is driven by the increasing need for mental health services in schools, hospitals, substance use treatment centers, and other settings.
Internships Are the Key to a Successful Counseling Career
At Northwest University, we know that one of the most vital elements of a well-rounded counseling education is an internship. A great internship can help you build practical skills, expand your professional network, improve your chances of finding a relevant job, and increase your overall effectiveness once you’re in the field. This is why we continually work to build collaborative partnerships with local mental health organizations and community partners who can help our students secure internships.
NU’s Annual Counseling Internship Fair
Each year, our College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (CSBS) hosts an internship fair, where these organizations are invited to come to campus and meet with our current counseling students. During the fair, students interact in person with site representatives and current interns and are offered the opportunity to build relationships, practice professional engagement, and network with potential internship sites.
Our counseling students have often expressed that the annual internship fair is highly beneficial to them, and many have landed significant opportunities as a result of this event.
In the videos below, which were taken during last year’s internship fair, you can get a quick glimpse of how CSBS supports their counseling students in the internship search.
