Your Guide to Successfully Navigating End-of-Semesteritis
Semesteritis is a term used to describe the physical and psychological incapability to remain diligent during the last three to four weeks of a semester. It can manifest itself in a variety of ways. Some who experience it decide to hang out with friends rather than study. Others feel inclined to stay home and watch Netflix. For nearly all who encounter it, however, it is a treacherous malady—one that often stands between the student and a successful semester.
Try the following tips and techniques to kick your case of semesteritis and finish the semester strong:
Reflect on what you’ve already done.
If you’re experiencing semesteritis, then you are hopefully pretty far along in the semester. Thus, you have already completed most of the coursework for each of your classes. Look back on all of your previous assignments and try to recall how much time and effort you put into them. Don’t let all your hard work throughout the semester be in vain.
Realize that the semester is almost over.
The end is in sight. You are only a few weeks away from never having to worry about your 10-page paper on Shakespeare’s Othello ever again. Keep focused on the tasks in front of you, and the semester will be over soon enough.
Create a plan.
Set up a checklist that includes all of the assignments and exams you have left to do before the end of the semester. Prioritize tasks in a day-by-day schedule based on each assignment’s due date and the time it will take you to complete it. Include in the schedule an event you create to reward yourself when you finish the rest of the checklist. Having something you enjoy to look forward to will keep you focused on the light at the end of the tunnel and help you stay motivated.
Reward yourself for success.
Incentivize and encourage yourself by rewarding your successes along the way. Every achievement is important, no matter how small. Try taking a short walk after each completed assignment or eating a piece of chocolate after every question you answer correctly. Creating a system of rewards for yourself keeps you relaxed and makes the grind of the end of semester less stressful.
Don’t admit defeat.
Often, students accept semesteritis as an inescapable reality. Rather than giving up, defy it by turning up the intensity and finishing the semester stronger than you started. The end of the semester is the period of time that determines what your grade report will look like. Would you rather feel after four months of work like you could have done more? Or would you prefer to feel like you did everything you could to achieve the highest outcome possible?
Remember that you are not alone.
Perhaps the biggest key to all of this is remembering that semesteritis is not specific to you. Other students are dealing with the same issue. Everyone wants the semester to end, but those who have the most success find ways to stay motivated through the finish.
