Head Coach Men’s Basketball


Position Details

Reports To Director of Athletics

Position Summary

Direct and coordinate all activities relating to the Men’s Basketball program. This is a .75 FTE position.

Essential Functions

  1. Recruit quality Christian athletes and assistant coaches.  Work to retain and graduate all athletes.
  2. Recruit and maintain a roster of 17 or more. 
  3. Follow all Cascade Conference, NAIA, guidelines, policies, and expectations regarding eligibility and recruiting specific to men’s basketball.
  4. Operate within established budget.  Read, understand, and follow all rules and timelines applying to financial aid, scholarships, insurance, injuries, travel, transportation (vans), purchasing, and end of the year expectations.
  5. Schedule and confirm all games, scrimmages, and referees, and submit schedules to the Director of Athletics and the Director of Sports Information.
  6. Schedule and plan all travel for games.
  7. Report all required game information to the Director of Sports Information on a timely basis.
  8. Report and follow up on all accidents and injuries with the athletic trainer.  Take responsibility for insurance information and procedures until the athlete has completed all responsibilities.
  9. Plan and supervise practices, coaching in a manner that will develop individual physical and character growth and develop team unity.
  10. Responsible for having athletes model and demonstrate the five core values of the NAIA Champions of Character Program (Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Servant Leadership, and Sportsmanship).
  11. Do everything possible to establish and maintain a Christ-centered environment.
  12. Fundraise to help offset the men’s basketball budget.
  13. Run basketball camps
  14. Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Education/Experience/Skills

Mandatory

  1. Bachelor’s degree.
  2. Three to five years of experience in coaching and/or directing athletic programs or the equivalent.           
  3. Strong organizational and leadership skills   
  4. Strong interpersonal, and written and verbal skills
  5. Demonstrated commitment to maintaining a safe work environment free of harassment, violence, and unlawful discrimination
  6. Proven ability to communicate effectively, get along well with co-workers, and deal effectively and professionally with colleagues
  7. Current First Aid / CPR / Bloodbourne Pathogen / AED training, with acceptable verification thereof (or willingness to immediately obtain same)
  8. Demonstrate commitment to maintaining a safe work environment free of harassment, violence, and unlawful discrimination
  9. Ability to communicate effectively, get along well with co-workers, and deal effectively and professionally with colleagues

Preferred

  1. Master’s degree in an athletically oriented field or related fiel.
  2. Five or more years of experience in coaching and/or directing athletic programs, or equivalent.   
  3. Proven quality organizational and leadership skills  
  4. Proven interpersonal, and written and verbal presentation skills

Working Environment

  1. Work is generally performed indoors in a typical office setting.
  2. Some weekend/evening work required.
  3. Travel, including overnight travel, may be required. 
  4. Position works with strictly confidential information.
  5. Requires work in outdoor weather conditions, including wet, extreme cold, and extreme heat.
  6. Frequently required to be in front of a computer screen for long periods of time.
  7. May be exposed to loud noise levels.

Physical Demands

The functions are usually performed while standing, but may involve some amount of time sitting, stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting (max. of 40 lbs.), walking, carrying, reaching, stretching, climbing, perform repetitive motions of the hands or wrists and other movements.  The abilities of seeing, hearing and speaking are also required. 

Compensation

Based on education and experience, the position has a hiring range of $33,000/year to $38,000/year plus excellent benefits.
