Student Resources

Health Insurance

Students are required by Federal and State laws to maintain adequate health insurance while attending Northwest University. The International Education office will coordinate insurance enrollment every semester, so that every full-time international student can access the care they need. If you have any questions, please email international@northwestu.edu.

Travel Resources

Traveling Inside the United States

Traveling within the United States is easy. Make sure you take your passport and I-20 with you.

Traveling Outside the United States

You can travel outside the United States while you are actively studying. However, please talk to the ISS department before you decide to leave the country as it can be complicated. Make sure you look into the visa requirements for the country you wish to enter.

  • Passport: Please make sure your passport is valid with at least 6 months left until its expiration date.
  • I-20: Your I-20 should have a travel signature on page 2 by a DSO in the International Student Services office within 6 months of your departure.
  • Visa: If your visa is expired, you will need to renew your F-1 student visa before you can come back into the United States.
  • If you are on OPT, in addition to the above you will also need your EAD card AND a letter from your employer stating that you are presently employed.  Do not travel on OPT if you don’t have a letter and/or aren’t working!

Please do not leave the country without speaking to a DSO in the International Student Services office if you have a change of status, reinstatement, or OPT application that is pending. You may jeopardize your application.

On Campus Resources

Library

The Northwest University Library is staffed with friendly, knowledgeable librarians and staff. Librarians will help you navigate the resources housed in the DV Hurst Library as well as those available online. During the academic year, the library is open until 11:30 pm to accommodate students' schedules. The library also includes a 24-hour study lab, equipped with computers, and work stations.

Computer Labs

There are 3 major computer labs and multiple computer workstations on campus for students' use.

Writing Center

Students can visit the Writing Center to get help with their academic work. Peer tutors are available to assist students in clearly communicating their ideas in written form. Peer tutors prove to be a valuable resource as they not only understand the writing process, but as fellow students they understand the pressures of academic life.

Fitness Center

At the Fitness Center, a wide-range of weight training and cardio machines are available for students to use to stay physically fit, free with NU Student ID card.

The Aerie Coffee Shop

The Aerie is a popular place to eat, study, and meet with friends on campus. Undergraduate and CELE students who live in undergraduate student housing will receive $100 every semester to spend at the Aerie.

The Caf

Most students eat in The Caf, the on campus cafeteria. Meal plans can be purchased if students live off-campus. A meal plan is included in the price of on-campus housing. There are many healthy and delicious food & drink options available at all meal times.

Students can receive mail & packages (including online textbook purchases) at their on-campus address, which is formatted as follows:
