MSITM vs MBA: Which Graduate Degree Is Right for Tech Leaders?

Professionals aiming for leadership roles often ask: Should I pursue an MBA or a Master of Science in Information Technology Management (MSITM)? Both degrees can open doors—and Northwest offers both—but the right choice depends on your career goals and the skills you want to develop. The following will help you better understand which one could be best for you.

Core Focus of Each Degree

  • MBA (Master of Business Administration): Broad focus on finance, marketing, operations, and organizational leadership. Great for general management roles.
  • MSITM: Specialized in IT leadership, cybersecurity, data analytics, and cloud computing. Ideal for professionals who want to lead in a tech-driven economy.

Curriculum Differences

  • MBA Coursework: Strategy, accounting, finance, HR management, economics.
  • MSITM Coursework: IT infrastructure, information security, IT project management, business analytics, and AI applications.

The MSITM and MBA at NU both offer a HyFlex format—one evening per week, available both on-campus and a live online option—making it easier for working professionals to participate without pausing their careers.

Career Outcomes

  • MBA Graduates: Often pursue careers in consulting, finance, or general management. Median salary: $120,000 annually (Graduate Management Admission Council, 2023).
  • MSITM Graduates: Move into roles like IT Manager, CTO, or Cybersecurity Lead. Median annual wage for IT managers: $169,510 (BLS, 2024).

If your goal is to become a leader at the intersection of technology and strategy, MSITM is the more direct path.

Which Degree Fits Your Goals?

Ask yourself:

  • Do I want to lead across all business functions? → MBA.
  • Do I want to lead technology transformation and manage IT systems at a strategic level? → MSITM.

Conclusion

Both MBA and MSITM degrees are valuable. But for professionals who want to specialize in IT leadership while gaining business strategy skills, the MSITM offers a sharper edge in today’s job market.
