Summer Journey Frequently Asked Questions
The Summer Journey is a youth theology program that exists to help students develop a greater awareness of their unique, God-given calling through an enriched understanding of the biblical story. Students will stay on the Northwest University campus, form deep friendships with like-minded peers, enjoy fun activities and outdoor adventure in the greater Seattle area and experience the Bible in new ways with the help of our outstanding pastors, mentors and professors.
Community Life
For six days students will experience life on a Northwest University campus, living in the dormitories and eating at the cafeteria. Each day will end with our famous “late-night snack”, leaving time for students to hang out, process the day’s events and have fun.
Teaching and Preaching
Students will receive top of the line teaching from PhDs and local pastors who are passionate about helping them understand the story of God and their unique place in it. Students will engage in classroom learning and discussion as well as evening services, times of prayer and worship through song.
Small Groups and Mentorship
Students will be mentored by vibrant NU students and staff who are committed to walking with them as they process all that they learn. Mentors will live with students in the dormitories and provide pastoral care and encouragement throughout their stay.
Activities
Each day students will engage in a variety of recreational activities and outdoor excursions both on campus and throughout the greater Seattle Area.
Yes! Scholars will not only be using much of Northwest University’s campus (including dormitory and cafeteria access) but will also be engaging in lectures each day that mirror typical collegiate classroom settings. In addition to this, if a Scholar agrees to write a short essay after the conclusion of the Summer Journey, they will be eligible to receive two credits towards a Northwest University class.
Our teaching at the Summer Journey revolves around two main subjects: Vocation and The Story of the Bible. Every scholar will participate in interactive lectures where they will be challenged to consider what it means to be called and invited into God's story. Students will study the real time and space (context) that the Bible was written in to better understand its message and more accurately apply its meaning to their day to day lives!. In each teaching session students will have the opportunity to ask questions and debrief their thoughts with their small group.
Yes! One of the Summer Journey’s main goals is to connect students with like-minded peers which can challenge and encourage them in their own walk with the Lord. We provide many activities and experiences which encourages interaction and relationship-building including group games, small groups, prayer time, and more.
Scholars are known for being specialists in their field with an aptitude for research, discovery, and study. Many of the greatest scholars aren’t just “smart,” they are deeply devoted to their life’s work because they know it has great meaning! This program invites students to embrace this rich tradition. At The Summer Journey, we aren’t looking for perfect students, we’re looking for real people that want to be inspired and guided by God in their life and study of the Bible.
Applications allow our team to get to know a little bit about each scholar and ensure that they are the right fit for our program! We are looking for students who are passionate about learning, have a relationship with God, and demonstrate an openness to discovering what they may not yet know about engaging with the Bible. Filling out an application helps us see which students embody each of these qualities.
Nominations help our team see that other leaders have recognized a student’s desire to “go deeper” in their faith life. You do not need a nomination to be considered for The Summer Journey, but nominations can be advantageous in that they provide us with a better understanding of the kind of student you are!
